Zooming above meandering rivers and the lush, verdant forests far below is an exhilarating rush like no other. The zipline can reach mind-boggling speeds of up to 95mph, and in some sections, you’ll be soaring over 380m above the ground. This isn’t an activity for the faint-hearted, but if you’re seeking heart-pounding thrills, it’s an absolute must for your Puerto Rico itinerary. While ziplines can be found across the Caribbean, such as those in Punta Cana, Puerto Rico takes the crown for having the longest zipline!

One of the most delightful experiences I had in Puerto Rico was our visit to Frutas del Guacabo, where we enjoyed a farm tour and a delicious brunch. This charming hydroponic farm and boutique is located approximately an hour away from San Juan.
Frutos del Guacabo was established by Angelie Martinez 12 years ago. Today, her compact yet influential hydroponic farm stands as a centerpiece of an island-wide shift toward embracing fresh, locally sourced, and sustainable gastronomy.
The farm’s bountiful produce and various offerings have become staples in some of Puerto Rico’s finest dining establishments. In a place that once relied on importing up to 90% of its food, this emerging trend of using locally-sourced ingredients represents a vital stride towards achieving sustainability.
Plan a visit to Frutos del Guacabo for an informative guided tour. During your visit, you’ll gain insights into local fruits and vegetables and have the opportunity to experience goat milking firsthand!

El Yunque National Forest is situated in the northeast region of the island and, despite its modest size at just under 29,000 acres, it stands as one of the most biologically diverse tropical rainforests in existence. With over 240 species of native trees, it teems with life in every corner.
Wandering through this lush expanse, you’ll encounter a network of hiking trails that lead you through dense forests, home to a fascinating array of wildlife, including the coqui, Puerto Rico’s national tree frog. Opt for Jeep Rental to Explore the Scenic Ruta Panoramica
If you’re looking to escape the city, Puerto Rico offers some incredible road trip opportunities. Among the most exceptional is the La Ruta Panorámica Luis Muñoz Marín (the Panoramic Route): a 167-mile-long network of roads that traverses the central mountain range, providing breathtaking scenic views along the way.
These serpentine mountain roads provide the ideal backdrop for an exhilarating road trip adventure. Be prepared for steep ascents, awe-inspiring vistas, and the opportunity to journey through rural agricultural landscapes and secluded towns that might remain undiscovered otherwise.
The journey can present its challenges! You might encounter sheer cliffs adjacent to the road, navigate hairpin turns, share the road with speedy drivers and trucks, and contend with swiftly changing weather conditions. Nevertheless, the roads are generally well-maintained, primarily consisting of two lanes, making the drive along the Panoramic Road relatively manageable.
For an authentic adventure and a more effortless drive, I highly suggest considering a jeep rental. We opted for a jeep for the day, and Discover Cars helped us secure the best deal. It was an incredibly enjoyable experience and proved to be far more suitable for tackling the rugged, twisting mountain roads!
Embark on a Nighttime Kayaking Adventure in the World’s Most Luminescent Bioluminescent Bay
One regret I have from my time in Puerto Rico is not having the opportunity to experience a nighttime visit to one of the bioluminescent bays.
There’s truly nothing quite like the otherworldly encounter of observing bioluminescence in its natural splendor. This captivating phenomenon is the result of the presence of microscopic organisms known as dinoflagellates, which emit a mesmerizing neon blue “glow in the dark” effect when agitated.
Puerto Rico is home to three bioluminescent bays, with one of them being the brightest in the world. Mosquito Bay, located on the nearby island of Vieques, boasts an incredibly high concentration of dinoflagellates. The absence of light pollution in the area further enhances the spectacular luminosity, creating a truly enchanting light display on the bay!
While it’s technically possible to make an independent visit to Mosquito Bay, the location can be rather remote and challenging to access. Moreover, nighttime kayaking in the bay is a pursuit best reserved for seasoned kayakers. Therefore, reserving a guided kayaking tour of Mosquito Bay is the most advisable way to fully immerse yourself in the astounding phenomenon of bioluminescence.
For a more convenient option closer to San Juan, Laguna Grande in Fajardo offers easier access and is a popular destination for witnessing bioluminescence.
Explore the World of Bomba Dancing
Just as Brazil has Samba and Cuba has Rumba, Puerto Rico has Bomba! Bomba is the island’s original native music, originating more than four centuries ago in the sugarcane plantations, crafted by enslaved individuals.
Bomba encompasses both the name of the rhythmically captivating music and the accompanying dance. It’s a fusion shaped by the diverse influences of Taino (indigenous), African, and European cultures.
In the realm of bomba, it’s the dancer who establishes the rhythm for the musicians, an inversion of the typical order. The outcome resembles a dialogue between the dancer and the principal musician, creating a harmonious and captivating exchange.
Make sure to attend a bomba performance or, if you’re feeling adventurous, give the dance moves a try while you’re in Puerto Rico. Numerous venues, like La Vergüenza in Old San Juan, host frequent shows that allow you to experience this vibrant cultural expression firsthand.
Indulge in a Culinary Adventure Along the Lechón Trail
If you’re not a vegetarian, one dish that’s an absolute must-try in Puerto Rico is lechón. This savory delight consists of a whole roasted pork, slow-cooked for several hours, typically over an open flame, resulting in delectably crispy skin and tender, succulent meat.
While you might occasionally encounter lechón in San Juan, this dish is traditionally savored in the rural heart of Puerto Rico. To relish the true essence of lechón, you’ll have to embark on a journey and make your way to the Ruta del Lechón (Lechón Trail) in Guavate.
Route 184 is flanked by a series of lechoneras, each offering this indispensable pork delicacy, along with classic accompaniments like rice and beans or mofongo (a plantain dish).
Begin your culinary journey at Lechonera Los Amigos, then continue your ascent up the mountainside via Route 184. Depending on your appetite, you can make stops at as many lechoneras as you desire during your adventure. Among the standout options is Lechonera Los Pinos, acclaimed by Anthony Bourdain as serving the finest roast pork he ever tasted!
ATV Exploration Experience
One of the top-rated excursions in Puerto Rico is the exhilarating ATV Adventure at Campo Rico Ranch, and the reasons behind its popularity are readily evident. Regrettably, I didn’t have the opportunity to experience it during my trip, and I sincerely lament that.
This ATV tour promises an incredible adventure as you ride on a high-powered ATV through the scenic landscapes of a private ranch located just outside of San Juan. As you navigate the trails, you’ll encounter the diverse local flora and fauna, passing by lagoons and limestone rock formations, all while enjoying breathtaking mountain vistas. It truly sounds like a thrilling and enjoyable experience, doesn’t it?
Embark on a Night of Bar-Hopping in Old San Juan
Were you aware that piña coladas originated in Puerto Rico? San Juan boasts two bars that lay claim to their invention: it’s either the Caribe Hilton in 1954 or the eclectic Barrachina in 1963. Regardless of the exact origin, the city undoubtedly holds the distinction of being the birthplace of one of the world’s most beloved cocktails.
I would highly recommend paying a visit to both of these “birthplaces” to savor the “original” piña colada, just to be thorough! While you’re at it, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the vibrant streets of Old San Juan through a lively bar-hopping excursion.
Old San Juan offers an array of fantastic watering holes, ranging from stylish dive bars serving local craft beer to eccentric cocktail bars. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
- La Factoria – Arguably the most renowned cocktail bar in Puerto Rico, this unassuming yet trendy establishment comprises a maze of rooms, each with distinctive decor and music styles. It currently holds the impressive #12 spot on the 50Best list of North America’s 50 Best Bars.
- Singular – Don’t miss the chance to try a Painkiller, a spirited modern rendition of the classic piña colada.
- Deavurdura – A laid-back local eatery that specializes in uncomplicated rum and fruit juice concoctions.
- Aqui se Puede – A beloved local hangout renowned for its handcrafted cocktails, hipster ambiance, and delectable cuisine.
- Taberna Lupulo – Widely recognized for its assortment of local and imported craft beers. This is the go-to spot for the latest beer releases in Puerto Rico!

Puerto Rico is a relatively compact island, making it quite convenient to navigate. However, the public transportation system is somewhat limited. If your plans involve exploring various regions of the island, your optimal choice is to rent a car.
Car Rental: Opting to rent a car is undeniably the most hassle-free mode of transportation for exploring Puerto Rico. If you intend to venture into the mountainous terrain, a jeep or 4WD vehicle could be beneficial, although it’s not an absolute requirement.Smaller car rentals begin at approximately $40-50 per day, while jeeps typically range from $80-100 per day. Discounts may be available for longer rental periods spanning several days or more.
When exploring Puerto Rico by car, the primary challenge you might face is traffic, particularly in and around larger towns. To mitigate this, it’s advisable to plan your journeys to avoid rush hour traffic when entering or leaving urban areas.
Bus: Puerto Rico doesn’t have a formal public bus system. Instead, there are “públicos,” a localized bus service that follows specific routes. This option is budget-friendly, but it lacks official timetables, which can make self-navigation a bit challenging. Having some knowledge of Spanish will be advantageous in this situation.
Alternative Options:
If you prefer not to drive and want to avoid relying on the sometimes unpredictable “públicos,” there are alternative solutions.
Uber/Taxi: Uber is available in most larger Puerto Rican towns, making it the easiest way to get around for shorter journeys. You may even be able to arrange an Uber for longer trips and schedule a return pick-up time. Alternatively, you can ask your hotel to book a taxi for both legs of your journey.
Tours and Private Transfers: You can also arrange private transfers or book tours that include hotel pickup. For instance, private transfers from the airport to your San Juan accommodation start at approximately $83.50 per group. When booking tours, I recommend using GetYourGuide as it offers user-friendly booking options and competitive prices.
Selecting Your Accommodation in Puerto Rico
Choosing where to stay in Puerto Rico hinges on the type of vacation experience you desire. If you desire proximity to the beach, there are numerous appealing choices. However, for first-time visitors to the island, I would suggest establishing your base in San Juan.
The capital city serves as an excellent starting point for venturing into other parts of the island. Additionally, within the city itself, there’s an abundance of attractions and activities, including the captivating Old San Juan and its historic castle. Moreover, the city boasts a plethora of bars and restaurants to keep you engaged in between your sightseeing adventures.
During my visit to San Juan, I had the pleasure of staying at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. This splendid establishment boasts a superb location in proximity to Condado Lagoon and provides convenient access to Old San Juan, as well as some of the city’s most vibrant nightlife destinations. Anticipate an air of classic opulence in the lobby and guest rooms, all complemented by impeccable service.
However, the true gem of the hotel is its pool or, to be precise, its pools, as guests have several options to select from. Among them, a stunning infinity pool that offers breathtaking ocean views, making it the perfect retreat for relaxation after a full day of exploring Puerto Rico!
