Back in the 1850s, the Bull Hotel functioned as a coaching inn. Three centuries earlier, it similarly provided respite for travelers on their journey from London to the South Coast. Today, it has been transformed into a splendid hotel with its stripped-wood interiors, standalone baths, 19 tastefully appointed English-style bedrooms, and an offering of some of the finest cuisine in Dorset. Rich in history and overflowing with charm, get ready to be captivated by its allure, just as I was.
Lulworth Cove Inn, Lulworth
The property is located in the heart of Lulworth village, just a few minutes from the beach.
The historical inn has preserved much of its original charm while undergoing a comprehensive renovation, resulting in a modern and fresh atmosphere, particularly in the bedrooms. The rooms feature white-washed wooden floors, vintage furnishings, and an abundance of beach and fossil-themed decorations, creating a delightful seaside ambiance. Notably, the pub on the premises is a beloved local establishment. I have frequently visited for a meal after a long beach stroll. In addition to the traditional pub fare, you can always find some exceptionally fresh, locally sourced seafood dishes on the menu!
Stoneleigh Barn, Sherborne
Featuring its stunning Abbey and two castles, Sherborne is undeniably one of Dorset’s most charming towns.
Stoneleigh Barn is an enchanting B&B situated within a converted 19th-century hay barn, located just outside of Sherborne. Therefore, it’s an ideal choice if you’re seeking a peaceful getaway. With only two guest rooms available, a stay here offers an exclusive experience. This picturesque barn is the perfect destination if you desire genuine tranquility and serenity!
The Crown Hotel, Blandford Forum
It is affiliated with the local Hall and Woodhouse chain, which established its brewery in Blandford Forum in 1777 and is renowned for producing the popular Badger Beer selection.
The Crown Hotel, situated within a converted Georgian coaching inn, is located just a short distance from the brewery, where you can enjoy a tour and tasting. The rooms offer ample space and feature polished oak floors, intricate ceilings, and eye-catching antique furniture. As is characteristic of all Hall and Woodhouse establishments, the pub downstairs serves quintessentially British cuisine that is incredibly delectable.
Bedrooms at The Albion, Wimborne Minster
Among all the hotels in Dorset where I’ve stayed, The Albion’s 1777. Bedrooms stood out as the most distinctive. This charming boutique inn, also owned by Hall and Woodhouse, dates back to the 17th century. The property is rich in local history, and the interior design reflects this, with rooms brimming with authentic period character.
Each of the ten bedrooms possesses its own distinct character, drawing inspiration from three prominent Georgian figures, ensuring that each room is truly unique. You can choose from the Jane Austen room, the Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy room, or the Charles Hall room.
I particularly adored the Jane Austen room, with its charming sloping attic walls, standalone copper bathtub, and quirky vintage furnishings. While there isn’t an on-site restaurant, breakfast is served at The Albion’s sister hotel, The Olive Branch, which is just a short “152 paces” away. It’s also a fantastic local dining option for dinner!
RNLI College, Pool
This is a hotel and restaurant located within the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s college, offering picturesque views of Poole Harbour. Each of the beautifully decorated rooms provides a splendid view of the harbor, just like the restaurant, which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a magnificent panoramic vista.
Even better, all the proceeds from the hotel contribute to funding the lifeboats and their dedicated crew, allowing you to support a noble cause while enjoying your stay.
Cabin, Winterbourne Steepleton
Situated on the outskirts of the tranquil coastal town of Winterbourne Steepleton, this charming cabin serves as an ideal weekend retreat. Tucked away in a corner of a working farm, the cabin is enveloped by fields and farm animals, and you can expect friendly visits from the farm’s amiable dog.
The host offers a daily breakfast basket filled with locally sourced goodies, allowing you to savor the delights that Dorset has to offer. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are numerous day trips, hiking routes, and cycling trails to keep you engaged. Additionally, there’s a small pebble beach ideal for a leisurely afternoon picnic or stroll.
The cabin is just a half-hour drive away from the renowned Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic Coast. Moreover, there are abundant coastal walk options nearby, with Golden Cap being our personal favorite.
Laundry Room – Netherbury
The Laundry Room is a cozy self-contained annex attached to a 200-year-old cottage. It comfortably accommodates two people and boasts its private entrance. The well-equipped kitchen allowed us to prepare our meals, and the impeccable cleanliness gave us the impression of being the first guests to ever stay there. Diana, our wonderful host, had skillfully decorated the Laundry Room with a laundry-themed decor. It’s an attractively priced accommodation, and we have intentions to revisit when we’re in the area again.
Mudeford Beach Huts
If you’re in search of the most fashionable glamping experience in Dorset, consider staying in the beach huts at Mudeford Spit. Situated just outside of Christchurch and with Hengistbury Head as its backdrop, this beach offers an ideal location for a coastal retreat. Moreover, it’s home to a row of the priciest beach huts in the United Kingdom, with one recently being sold for £280,000!
Only a limited selection of huts are offered for rental, making it quite an exclusive experience. These huts are individually painted in vibrant colors, and many exude a chic and stylish vibe. Some even feature ladders leading to small upper areas, while most come equipped with compact kitchens, complete with various types of cookers. The power sources vary, with some huts relying on solar power, others on gas, and some having no electricity at all. Additionally, there are separate restroom and shower facilities along the beach. It’s undeniably a back-to-basics experience, but one that imparts a delightful toy-town atmosphere with charming vintage furniture!
Caalm Camp, Shaftesbury
If you seek a tranquil countryside escape in Dorset, the traditional Mongolian yurts at Caalm Camp are an excellent choice. Nestled in a serene field within the stunning Dorset countryside, the site features six cozy yurts, all tastefully furnished.
Each yurt is furnished with a wrought iron double bed, two day beds, fresh linens, a small kitchenette, and a wood-burning stove. A short stroll from the yurts will lead you to the Old Haybarn, which contains a well-equipped communal kitchen, dining area, and a lounge. Additionally, each yurt comes with its own dedicated wet room.
In addition to the natural surroundings, the yurt site is conveniently located near several attractions, including Longleat Safari Park, Stonehenge, Wookey Hole, Stourhead, and the Jurassic Coast. Caalm Camp offers the ideal setting for an outdoor-oriented vacation, seamlessly blending the comforts of home with the pleasures of the great outdoors.
